The retail sector is one of the largest contributors to the service sector. In Kolkata, newer expansion of jobs and employment opportunities is largest in the retail sector. Retail industry jobs is based on shifts of 6-8 hours. If the restaurant or store is open for 12 hours, then 2 shifts are usually conducted. If the organization is relatively smaller in scale, then a single shift is enough. Mostly retail jobs are offered in garment stores and eateries. Employees in this sector have fixed hours usually. However, during festivals like Durga Puja, Eid and Christmas, work hours may get extended.

Stores which require retailers for sales rather than assisting customers may have this kind of a salary scheme.   • To work in this sector, one has to have good communication skills since the job requires addressing queries of customers regarding products and explaining to them working of different items.Retailers get easily employed if they are conversant in English, Hindi and the regional language because communication happens mainly in these 3 types of languages. 
  • Retailers also need to be very patient because they might have to explain the same thing to more than 10-20 customers in a day. 
  • Retailers need to be very calm as they might face situations where a customer misbehaves with them. Losing your temper in the face of a customer enquiry is not at all desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of operating a computer is needed. You might have to work at the cash register where you will have to scan barcodes and prepare bills for various items. Being quick with mathematics will be an added advantage in such a situation.
  • For incentive based jobs, skills to convince people are of utmost importance. Since you salary will depend on the number of products you are able to sell, you will have to be a smooth talker. It might include suggesting an item to someone or a particular rental plan for a cell phone connection etc.

To get employed in the retail sector, being of age and a high school diploma is enough since the job does not require you to have specific skills. College students who are in need of pocket money can also take these jobs up as part time work. The money is enough to cover your monthly expenses.
