Working Abroad As A Hospitality Professional

Several countries are boosting their economy through the development of tourism. Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, UAE are some of the countries that are enticing foreign tourists with luxury hotels, great shopping destinations and beaches to relax in. The largest hotel chains in the world have their hotels in different cities of these countries. Not only are the largest hotel chains making money off these places, but smaller budget hotels have also opened up that cater to customers who cannot afford luxurious hotels.

Sometimes these hotels are much understaffed which is why they want to bring people from overseas to work there. They usually require receptionists, lobby managers, floor managers, chefs, discotheque managers etc. and they hire many Indians to work there. The reason for this sort of hiring is that Indians are well versed in English which is not a big plus point in many of these countries. The payment offered is quite good. It is much more than what you will be making in a hotel working here. Some of these hotels also provide employees with accommodation. The conditions for working here are hygienic and congenial for you.

The opportunities to progress in these hotels are quite high. There are many hotels present in these countries and you can change your job if you do not like your present job. At any point in your life, if you want to come back to the country, then the experience that you gather there will fetch you a good job.

However, we have all heard of scams involving agents who promised a job in a certain restaurant or hotel and instead put people in a sweatshop. You should be aware for the kind of job you are signing up for. It would be best that you do not consult hospitality recruiters for these kinds of jobs. You should instead log into a job portal, upload your CV and find the right kind of job for yourself. You will be able to verify the terms and conditions of the job yourself and also judge how your employer will be like.

You should also make your Visa application through proper channels otherwise you might be stuck with a work permit that won’t be in your favour. Make your working terms and conditions clear before moving. Several Indian expats have faced trouble after leaving their job because their passports were with their employers who were unwilling to return it to them. Since it is a foreign country, the Indian consulate will be your only friend in these matters. Even after approaching the consulate, it may take several weeks for you to receive it back. On the brighter side, these problems were faced mostly by employees in the Gulf countries. Indians working in Russia, Ukraine, Singapore and Malaysia have seldom faced such problems, let alone the ones working in UK and USA.
